Slaughterhouse wastewater is primarily generated during livestock and poultry slaughtering, dehairing, carcass dressing, scalding, organ processing, equipment cleaning, workshop washing, and floor cleaning operations. It is a typical high-strength organic wastewater characterized by high suspended solids (SS), high grease and oil content, and elevated ammonia nitrogen (NH₃-N) in the meat processing industry.
The wastewater mainly consists of high-strength process wastewater, workshop cleaning wastewater, and floor wash water. Typical pollutants include blood, hair, meat particles, animal fats, proteins, organic matter, as well as extremely high concentrations of COD, BOD, ammonia nitrogen (NH₃-N), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP).
Although slaughterhouse wastewater is generally highly biodegradable, its pollutant concentrations are extremely high, and organic matter rapidly decomposes, leading to odor generation and deterioration. Due to centralized slaughtering schedules, wastewater flow and pollutant loads fluctuate significantly throughout the day, making odor control and stable treatment major environmental challenges. As a result, slaughterhouse wastewater is among the most strictly regulated wastewater streams in the livestock and food processing industries.
Slaughterhouses typically operate in batch-based and intermittent production cycles, resulting in short periods of highly concentrated wastewater discharge that can easily overload biological treatment systems, causing excessive COD, ammonia nitrogen, and total nitrogen in the treated effluent.
The wastewater contains large amounts of floating grease, emulsified fats, hair, and suspended solids, which readily adhere to pipelines, biological media, and membrane systems, causing severe clogging, sludge accumulation, odor problems, and high maintenance costs.
High concentrations of proteins and organic matter often lead to sludge bulking, poor sludge settling, and unstable biological treatment performance.
Conventional standardized wastewater treatment equipment generally lacks sufficient oil resistance and anti-clogging capabilities to handle slaughterhouse wastewater effectively. In addition, many slaughterhouses operate on limited sites with fluctuating production capacities, making traditional concrete treatment facilities difficult to expand or retrofit. A customized, high-efficiency treatment solution is therefore essential.
To address the characteristics of high grease content, high suspended solids, high nitrogen loading, and significant flow fluctuations, our solution adopts the following proven treatment process:
Pretreatment (Solid & Oil Removal) → Flow Equalization & Conditioning → Anaerobic Treatment → Biological Nitrogen Removal → Advanced Sedimentation & Polishing → Water Reuse
Wastewater first passes through automatic mechanical bar screens, hair removal equipment, oil separators, and Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) systems to remove hair, meat particles, floating grease, and coarse suspended solids.
An equalization tank stabilizes wastewater flow and pollutant concentrations, minimizing hydraulic and organic shock loading.
A high-efficiency anaerobic reactor significantly reduces high-strength organic pollutants before biological treatment.
The wastewater then enters a two-stage A/O biological treatment system, providing enhanced removal of COD, ammonia nitrogen, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus.
Finally, sedimentation and precision filtration ensure stable compliance with discharge standards. Treated water can be reused for workshop floor cleaning and facility washing where applicable.
This solution is specifically designed for the demanding operating conditions of the slaughterhouse industry, effectively addressing critical challenges including:
The system consistently produces effluent that complies with slaughterhouse wastewater discharge regulations while supporting water reuse.
Customized equipment can be designed according to processing capacity, peak wastewater flow, plant layout, and site conditions, featuring oil-resistant, anti-clogging, corrosion-resistant structures and compact modular systems that effectively minimize hair accumulation and grease deposition.
All core mechanical, electrical, and water treatment equipment is certified to CE, UL, and ISO standards, ensuring high safety, reliability, and compliance with international project requirements.
The process offers excellent hydraulic and organic shock resistance together with highly efficient biological nitrogen removal, significantly reducing maintenance frequency, sludge disposal costs, and operating expenses.
Water reuse rates can exceed 90%, while the modular design minimizes installation space, allows flexible expansion, and enables fully automated operation suitable for centralized slaughterhouse production.
We have successfully completed numerous wastewater treatment projects for large-scale livestock and poultry slaughterhouses as well as meat processing industrial parks.
A representative project involved a comprehensive slaughterhouse wastewater treatment system with a treatment capacity of 1,200 m³/day, serving mixed processing lines for pork, beef, lamb, poultry, and duck.
The system effectively resolved industry challenges including grease-related equipment fouling, excessive ammonia nitrogen, and odor emissions, while maintaining stable year-round operation and successfully passing environmental acceptance inspections and routine regulatory audits.
We provide comprehensive EPC (Engineering, Procurement & Construction) solutions for slaughterhouse wastewater treatment, including:
