High-COD Cathode Delamination Wastewater Treatment System | Fujian Lithium Battery Project

High-COD Cathode Delamination Wastewater Treatment System | Fujian Lithium Battery Project

Subtitle

Designed for cathode delamination wastewater from lithium battery manufacturing, this integrated treatment system combines equalization, Fenton advanced oxidation, coagulation & sedimentation, biological treatment, and advanced filtration to efficiently remove refractory organic contaminants, reduce COD, and deliver stable effluent for compliant discharge or water reuse.

Technical Specifications

This project was implemented at a new energy battery manufacturing facility in Fujian, China, providing a customized wastewater treatment solution for wastewater generated during the cathode delamination (coating stripping) process.

The system is designed to accommodate the continuous wastewater discharge typical of battery production lines while meeting both Fujian industrial wastewater discharge standards and on-site water reuse requirements.

Standard Process Flow

Cathode delamination wastewater is recognized as one of the most challenging wastewater streams in battery manufacturing. It typically contains:

  • High concentrations of stripping chemicals
  • Polymer organic compounds
  • Residual electrolyte
  • Stable refractory organic contaminants
  • Complexing agents
  • Extremely high COD

Conventional coagulation or biological treatment alone is generally insufficient to achieve stable compliance.

The system is well suited for:

  • New wastewater treatment facilities
  • Capacity expansion projects
  • Environmental compliance upgrades
  • Water reuse system retrofits
  • Existing treatment plant modernization

The solution fully supports the increasingly stringent environmental regulations governing China's rapidly growing new energy industry.

High-COD Cathode Delamination Wastewater Treatment Project for a Lithium Battery Manufacturing Facility in Fujian

Fujian has become one of South China's leading manufacturing centers for lithium batteries and energy storage systems. During cathode production, coating removal and electrode stripping operations continuously generate large volumes of highly concentrated organic wastewater.

This wastewater contains polymer-based stripping agents, residual electrolytes, organic processing additives, and trace complexing contaminants. Because these compounds possess highly stable molecular structures and poor biodegradability, conventional coagulation or biological treatment processes are generally unable to achieve satisfactory pollutant removal.

Without effective treatment, wastewater commonly exhibits excessive COD, persistent turbidity, residual odors, and poor water quality, making both regulatory compliance and water reuse difficult while increasing environmental risks for battery manufacturers.

Based on the wastewater characteristics, continuous production requirements, and local environmental regulations in Fujian, Baihuipu developed a highly stable and customized wastewater treatment solution specifically engineered for cathode delamination wastewater.

Wastewater is first collected in a dedicated equalization tank, where fluctuations in flow rate and pollutant concentration are balanced. This equalization stage effectively minimizes the impact of intermittent production discharge and protects downstream treatment units from hydraulic and organic shock loading.

To address the refractory nature of stripping wastewater, the system employs Fenton Advanced Oxidation as its primary treatment technology. The oxidation process efficiently breaks down stable polymer organic molecules and destroys complex organic structures, significantly improving biodegradability while reducing high COD concentrations and degrading stripping chemical residues.

Following oxidation, precise pH adjustment optimizes reaction conditions before specialized coagulation and flocculation chemicals are added. These reagents rapidly capture suspended solids, colloidal organic matter, and remaining contaminants, forming dense flocs that are effectively removed through sedimentation.

The pretreated wastewater then enters the hydrolytic acidification and biological treatment system, where specially selected microorganisms further degrade residual biodegradable organic compounds, improving overall water quality and ensuring stable treatment performance.

As a final polishing stage, the treated water passes through precision sand filtration and activated carbon filtration, removing trace suspended matter, residual color, and odors. The final effluent is suitable for compliant discharge or low-impurity industrial reuse within the manufacturing facility.

The complete treatment system features a high degree of automation, stable continuous operation, and minimal maintenance requirements, making it ideally suited for modern lithium battery manufacturing plants operating around the clock.

Since commissioning, the project has consistently delivered reliable treatment performance, effectively resolving one of the industry's most challenging wastewater streams. The system enables the customer to achieve environmental compliance, reduce freshwater consumption through water reuse, lower operating costs, and support sustainable, high-quality battery manufacturing.

This successful installation serves as an excellent reference project for high-COD cathode delamination wastewater treatment in the global lithium battery and energy storage industries, demonstrating Baihuipu's expertise in advanced industrial wastewater treatment solutions.
