Water and wastewater generated from green hydrogen production primarily originate from water electrolysis, purified water production, electrode cleaning, system blowdown, cooling water circulation, and workshop cleaning. These streams represent the core water treatment applications in renewable energy–powered hydrogen production facilities integrating solar and wind energy.
Unlike conventional industrial wastewater, wastewater from green hydrogen production mainly consists of high-purity saline wastewater and equipment cleaning wastewater. Typical pollutants include acid and alkali conditioning chemicals, calcium and magnesium hardness ions, chlorides, sulfates, and trace electrode metal contaminants.
The wastewater generally exhibits very low COD, excellent biodegradability, but relatively high salinity and a strong tendency toward scaling. Frequent start-up and shutdown cycles of electrolyzers can cause fluctuations in both wastewater flow and water quality. Continuous blowdown from circulating systems results in increasing Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), which may lead to equipment scaling, pipeline corrosion, and reduced electrolyzer efficiency if not properly controlled.
Water treatment systems must consistently produce high-purity process water for hydrogen production while complying with applicable industrial wastewater discharge and water reuse standards.
The primary challenges facing green hydrogen projects are maintaining stable water quality and ensuring long-term system reliability.
Insufficient control of source water hardness and dissolved salts can cause scaling in electrolyzers and membrane systems, directly reducing hydrogen production efficiency while increasing energy consumption.
Conventional standardized water treatment equipment is often unable to accommodate the intermittent and fluctuating operating conditions typical of renewable energy-powered hydrogen production facilities, resulting in reduced operational stability.
Since most green hydrogen plants are integrated with solar and wind power systems, installation environments vary considerably. Standard equipment often cannot adequately address site-specific requirements for equipment dimensions, corrosion resistance, and operational flexibility.
In addition, hydrogen production requires ultra-high-purity process water. Conventional water treatment technologies frequently fail to achieve the required water quality, leading to accelerated electrode degradation, increased maintenance costs, and reduced equipment lifespan.
Many projects also lack integrated, customized solutions that combine ultrapure water production, wastewater treatment, and water reuse into a single optimized system.
To meet the stringent water quality requirements of green hydrogen production, we provide a dedicated treatment process consisting of:
Raw Water Pretreatment → Water Softening → Advanced Membrane Desalination → EDI Ultrapure Water Production → Concentrate Recovery & Reuse
Raw water first passes through multimedia filtration and activated carbon filtration to remove suspended solids and impurities.
A fully automatic water softening system removes calcium and magnesium ions, effectively minimizing scaling potential.
The softened water is then treated through an Ultrafiltration (UF) system followed by an anti-fouling Reverse Osmosis (RO) membrane system to remove dissolved salts and trace contaminants.
An Electrodeionization (EDI) system subsequently produces ultrapure water that fully satisfies the water quality requirements for hydrogen electrolysis.
The small volume of concentrated wastewater is further treated through concentration and recovery processes for reuse, maximizing water utilization and minimizing wastewater discharge.
