Dairy wastewater is primarily generated from raw milk pretreatment, pasteurization, fermentation and blending, yogurt and milk powder production, filling equipment cleaning, CIP (Clean-in-Place) system cleaning, and plant floor washdown operations. It is a typical high-protein, high-fat, nutrient-rich organic wastewater commonly found in the food and beverage industry.
The wastewater generally consists of high-strength cleaning residues and medium- to low-strength production wash water. Typical pollutants include milk proteins, milk fats, lactose, fatty acids, suspended solids (SS), as well as elevated COD, BOD, ammonia nitrogen (NH₃-N), and total phosphorus (TP).
Although dairy wastewater exhibits excellent biodegradability, it is characterized by significant fluctuations in both flow rate and organic loading due to batch production schedules and routine cleaning operations. The high organic content is highly susceptible to decomposition and acidification, promoting bacterial growth, odor generation, and the production of large volumes of viscous sludge. Without proper treatment, dairy wastewater can easily cause eutrophication, making it one of the key wastewater streams requiring stringent environmental management in the food processing industry.
Dairy wastewater treatment presents several industry-specific challenges:
To address the characteristics of dairy wastewater—including high organic loading, high viscosity, fluctuating flow, and rapid biodegradation—we employ a dedicated treatment process consisting of:
Mechanical Pretreatment → Flow Equalization → Anaerobic Treatment → Aerobic Biological Treatment → Advanced Sedimentation & Filtration → Water Reuse
Wastewater first passes through fine screens and oil-water separation units to remove milk fat, coarse suspended solids, and protein flocs. An equalization tank balances flow and pollutant concentrations, minimizing shock loads caused by batch production.
A high-efficiency anaerobic reactor significantly reduces high-strength organic pollutants and lowers the overall COD load. The effluent is subsequently treated in an A/O (Anoxic/Oxic) biological system, where COD, ammonia nitrogen, and total phosphorus are further removed.
Finally, high-efficiency clarification and precision filtration ensure stable compliance with discharge standards. The treated water can be reused for plant floor cleaning and general washing applications, reducing freshwater consumption.
